about.

What does “gleaning the field” mean?

In agriculture…

gleaning means to gather what is left of a crop after its primary harvest. The bounty comes from “the field.”

In academia…

the field refers to the theoretical landscape of a given discipline. As a knowledge-producing community, academia draws lessons from empirical evidence, ongoing research, and the pursuit of new understanding.

Established in 2016 as a repository for ideas, this site curates lessons garnered my own practice as a garden educator and findings from my dissertation study. The name, Gleaning the Field, is an homage to the twin disciplines whose confluence inspired me to investigate how school gardens grow in my local community.

    1. Thank you so much, Linda! I learned so much from you and so many others about the value of service. You encouraged me to make gardening part of what I would do for the long haul. I’m currently working on a grant that integrates literature into cooking and gardening instruction, so I get to marry all my passions.
